POST EXTRACTION INSTRUCTIONS 

On the day of extraction : 

  • Please continue to bite on the gauze pad for the next 30 minutes to control bleeding.  Do not change it during this time.  If you are still bleeding after 30 minutes, you may change  the gauze and continue to bite for an additional 30 minutes.  Small amounts of blood in the saliva should be expected over the next day.

  • Numbness may  continue for few hours .Be careful not to bite ,chew ,pinch or scratch numb area such as lip, tongue etc. 

  • Pain : Mild pain and discomfort is normal after surgery . Take pain medication and antibiotics  as prescribed and  complete the full course of medications.   

  • Swelling : Apply ice bag to the face over operated area to minimise swelling . Apply for 15 minutes on and off throughout the day . 

  • Avoid rinsing the mouth ,using straws, sucking ,spitting out saliva or blood, smoking etc as this may dislodge the clot and prevent healing. 

  • Avoid brushing for next 8 hrs .

  • Eat soft foods and  cold foods such as plain ice cream  without nuts/ choco chips  etc.

  • Limit to calm activities . 

From next day onwards : 

• After 24 hours, gentle rinsing with a saltwater solution (1 tsp salt with 1 glass of water) Rinse 2-3 times a day .   Continue for 5 days .

• Diet : Eat soft foods for the first 2 days. Return to normal regular meals after that if possible.

• Brushing should be gentle and avoid brushing the extraction site for 3 days.

• Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages till sutures are removed and prescribed medication is        completed.

• Avoid mouth washes .

• Avoid blowing your nose for one week.

FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENTS:

You may need to return to the clinic  to have sutures removed, or just for a brief follow up for checking the healing. 

Please contact us if there is any of the following: 

  • Uncontrollable pain, 

  • Excessive  or severe bleeding, 

  • Marked fever, 

  • Excessive  warm swelling occurring a few days after the procedure 

  • Reactions to medications like  rash, itching, or breathing problems
